Financial KPIs help answer specific questions about performance, liquidity and risk. A useful metric has a clear definition, reliable source and person responsible for responding when the result changes.
Select measures that fit the business model, such as operating margin, collection days or available liquidity. State the period and calculation method. Distinguish percentages from absolute amounts so that growth does not conceal a deteriorating margin or funding position.
Review trends and relevant segments rather than depend on one overall average. Check exceptional items and changes in accounting or product mix before comparing periods. A ratio can improve because its denominator changed, even when the underlying position did not.
Connect each KPI to a practical decision and an appropriate review frequency. Preserve the source data and calculations. Avoid building a large dashboard whose indicators cannot be reconciled or whose apparent thresholds have no business justification.
