Startup metrics should answer a decision question. A product team may need to know whether new users reach a useful outcome, while a founder needs to know whether the business has enough cash to keep learning.
Track activation and retention by cohort so that recent growth does not hide weak repeat use. Define the qualifying action and observation window before comparing cohorts. Report customer acquisition cost alongside gross margin and the time needed to recover that cost.
Keep a short metric dictionary with the formula, data source and exclusions. Separate signed contracts, recognized revenue and cash collected. Change the operating plan when a measure reveals a problem; collecting more dashboard tiles is not an improvement.
