First Order Risk Review for E-Commerce

The first e-commerce order should test whether the product and fulfilment process support the promise made to customers. Buying a large quantity after inspecting one polished sample can hide variation, packaging damage and operational problems that become expensive once orders begin.

Check the order against the listing

Match each SKU and variant to the specification, quantity and approved sample. Confirm the packaging, labels and barcodes your fulfilment process requires. Check dimensions and weight used for storage and shipping estimates rather than relying on an unverified product page.

Agree on inspection and the treatment of shortages, defects and substitutions before dispatch. For dropshipping or outsourced fulfilment, run a test order through the actual process, including tracking and customer notifications. A test return can reveal gaps that a successful delivery will not.

Keep the first commitment manageable

Estimate the cash needed for stock, freight, platform fees and returns. Separate gross sales from the money available after those costs. Choose an initial quantity you can inspect and support while the process is still being validated.

After receipt, reconcile the inventory and review customer feedback by product variant. Record the cause of failures rather than assuming all complaints have the same origin. Reorder decisions should consider saleable stock and service performance alongside sales volume.
