Dual sourcing reduces dependence on one supplier only when the second source can actually meet the requirement. Two company names on a purchasing list do not establish a workable alternative.
Qualify the second supplier's product, capacity, materials and delivery route. Check whether both suppliers depend on the same upstream facility or transport constraint. Test an order and define how volume would move during a disruption.
Review the cost of maintaining readiness alongside the continuity benefit. Keep specifications and approvals current at both sources. Exercise the transfer process so that a contingency does not depend on an untested assumption.
