Supplier Evidence Checklist for Entrepreneurship

An early-stage business often needs suppliers before its demand forecast is dependable. The evidence checklist should help the founder identify a supplier that can support a realistic first step without committing the business to volumes or costs it cannot sustain.

Test the assumptions behind the offer

Describe the customer problem and the minimum deliverable you need to test it. Ask for examples relevant to that deliverable, the smallest workable order and the costs that change at higher volumes. Establish what setup work is reusable and what would need to be paid again after a design change.

For product development, distinguish a prototype from a sample made with the intended production process. For services, ask whether the proposed team can support the launch timeframe. Check who owns the resulting design, files or tooling and how you can access them.

Review flexibility as well as price

Ask how the supplier handles changes, delays and a slower-than-expected launch. Record lead times for materials and production separately. Identify any dependency on a single person, component or subcontractor that would be difficult to replace.

Compare offers against the same initial scope and document the assumptions that remain untested. A supplier may be suitable for a pilot without being ready for sustained volume. Keep those decisions separate and schedule another review when the business has evidence of demand.
