First Order Risk Review for Supply Chain

First Order Risk Review for Supply Chain
First Order Risk Review for Supply Chain

The first supply-chain order tests how the proposed plan works in practice. The review should follow the goods from material availability to receipt, because an acceptable unit price and production date do not by themselves establish that the buyer will receive usable stock on time.

Align the order and operating plan

Confirm the product version, quantities, delivery location and required date. Work backwards through inspection, transport and production to identify the decisions that must happen earlier. Check whether the supplier has allocated materials and capacity or is still waiting for approval.

Specify packaging, identification and the records that should accompany delivery. Make the inspection and release responsibilities clear. If a result falls outside the requirement, establish who can approve a concession and how affected goods will be identified.

Plan for an incomplete delivery

Review the effect of a shortage, delay or damaged shipment on the buyer's operations. Identify a response that can be used within the actual lead time, such as a staged delivery or an approved substitute. Do not assume that a backup supplier can deliver immediately.

At receipt, reconcile quantities and review the condition and documentation of the goods. Compare actual dates with the agreed plan and investigate the causes of variation. Use the findings to adjust replenishment and escalation arrangements before increasing the next order.
